What does beauty have to do with design thinking and Twitter?

Earlier this month, LUNAR’s John Edson traveled to the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica to speak at the DMI Design Thinking Conference. This year’s theme was “Designing the Next Economy” with a look at the shifting role design will have to drive real innovation and global change.

John covered a topic that’s core to LUNAR’s business: creating products, services and experiences that are beautiful, ingenious and charismatic. In the Next Economy, products and services will speak for themselves outside of marketing or advertising, so their design needs to authentically and emotionally connect with people.

After outlining his framework and sharing lessons for creating great products, services and experiences that make a difference, John asked participants to envision new ideas for beauty, ingenuity and charisma in the Next Economy. Table teams posted microstories and supporting imagery to Twitter using the hashtage #dmine.

“We’ve never tried a workshop like this before, but the constraints and affordances of Twitter made for the perfect discussion platform,” John said. “The ideas that came out of the session are now online contributing to the larger conversation about how design needs to change to empower companies in the future.”
